What is the active ingredient in Exputex?

The active ingredient of Exputex cough bottle is Carbocisteine. Exputex is used for a chesty cough or as an expectorant.

What is the Exputex Dose?

Exputex is suitable for children 2 years and older.

  • 2-5 years:   The usual dose is half a 5ml spoonful (135mg) two to three times daily.
  • 6-12 years: The usual dose is one 5ml spoonful (250mg) two to three times daily
  • Adults: The usual dose is three 5ml spoonfuls three times daily initially, reducing to two 5ml spoonfuls three times dauly when a satisfactory response has been obtained.

Does Exputex make you sleepy?

Exputex is non-drowsy and therefore is suitable to take at anytime during the day without affecting your ability to drive or carry on with your daily routine.

Is Carbocistine good for a dry cough?

Unfortunately Carbocistine, the active ingredient of exputex is only suitable for chesty coughs as it helps to aids the removal of phlegm from the chest.

Carbocisteine vs Guaifenesin?

Both these active ingredients are available over the counter in pharmacies as cough bottles for Chesty Coughs. Whilst both have been shown to be affective at relieving the symptoms Carbocisteine appears to have more science behind its usage. It is also a more popular and frequently prescribed cough bottle in Ireland for chesty coughs.

Dosage for Use

Dosage for Use

Adults: Initially 15ml three times a day, reducing to 10ml three times daily when a satisfactory response is obtained

Children: 6 – 12 years: 5ml two to three times daily

Children: 2 – 5 years: 2.5ml two to three times daily

Under 2 years: Not recommended.

Warnings
Do Not Exceed the Stated Dose.
If you are pregnant, have a history of, or are currently suffering from peptic ulceration, consult your Doctor or Pharmacist before taking this product.
If symptoms persist, consult your doctor.
Keep out of the reach and sight of children.

Storage Instructions
Once opened use within one month.

Ingredients

The active ingredient: carbocisteine. Each 5ml spoonful of Exputex contains 250mg of carbocisteine

Other ingredients: levomenthol, ethanol (alcohol), saccharin sodium, sunset yellow FCF (E110), sodium ethyl parahydroxybenzoate (E215), sodium propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E217), sodium methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E219), citric acid monohydrate, sodium hydroxide, carmellose sodium, glycerol, orange flavour, condensed milk flavour and purified water.
