About EllaOne

About EllaOne

What is ellaOne?
EllaOne is an emergency contraceptive pill which contains the ingredient Ulipristal acetate. It is effective at preventing pregnancy when taken within 120 hours of unprotected sex. It works in a similar way as many contraceptive pills, by preventing your ovaries from releasing an egg.

EllaOne is not safe to be used on a regular basis and should be for emergency use only. You should talk to a nurse or doctor about a more regular method of contraception that can be used to protect you from pregnancy every time you have sex (such as a contraceptive pill or a diaphragm) and avoid having to rely on emergency contraception.

Is ellaOne effective?
EllaOne is effective at preventing 98% of possible pregnancies when taken within the time frame of 120 hours, as long as you are not ovulating. You mustn’t take it if more than 120 hours have passed since you had sex and you mustn’t take it if you are already pregnant. EllaOne does not work if you are already pregnant and it could harm your baby.

It is possible that ellaOne could be less effective at preventing pregnancy if you have taken the contraceptive pill in the last 7 days. EllaOne may also be less effective if you have a Body Mass Index BMI of 30 or higher.

Even when taking ellaOne as advised, there remains a small risk that you may become pregnant. Speak to your doctor if you are unsure as to whether the morning after pill has worked.

How is ellaOne taken?
EllaOne is taken as one single tablet. Swallow the tablet with water. You can take the tablet before, after or without a meal. It is important that you take it as soon as possible and that you take it within 120 hours of having sex.

If you are sick within three hours of taking ellaOne you need to take another tablet.

Should I take ellaOne or Levonelle?
Which morning after pill is best for you depends partly on how long ago you had unprotected sex. Levonelle is effective for up to three days (72h) after sex, ellaOne works until up to 5 days (120h) after sex. In addition, you should tell your doctor about any medications you are taking, or any health conditions, so that they can decide which medication is best for you.

EllaOne can cause a wider range of side effects, which is why you may wish to choose Levonelle to prevent pregnancy from sex within the past 72 hours. But ellaOne is also more effective than Levonelle at preventing pregnancy. EllaOne is also not recommended for women who are breastfeeding.

When do you need to take ellaOne?
You should take ellaOne as soon as possible after you have had unprotected sex.

You can take it up to 120 hours after you have had unprotected sex but the sooner you take it, the more likely it is to be effective.

Who can take ellaOne?
You mustn’t take ellaOne if you are allergic to any of the ingredients.

You also mustn’t take it if you are already pregnant as it won’t work.

Tell your doctor if you think you could already be pregnant. It is also important that you mention if you suffer from severe asthma or liver disease or if you are taking any medication.
